S/S Turso was built in 1944 at the Wärtsilä Hietalahti shipyard in Helsinki as a harbour icebreaker for the City of Helsinki. The vessel served in Finland for only a short time, as it was handed over to the Soviet Union as part of Finland’s war reparations in 1945. In the Soviet Union, the vessel was renamed Taifun and served for several decades, including in the port of Leningrad, now known as St. Petersburg.
In 2004, the Finnish Satamajäänsärkijä S/S Turso Association succeeded in purchasing the vessel back for Finland. Turso arrived in Finland in August 2004, after approximately 60 years abroad, and was subsequently restored as a museum and heritage vessel.
